Public Bank’s wholly-owned subsidiary, Public Mutual won the Most Outstanding Islamic Fund Manager award for the third consecutive year at the 6th KLIFF (Kuala Lumpur Islamic Finance Forum) Islamic Finance Awards 2009 ceremony. The award was presented by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Y.B Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop to Public Mutual Chief Executive Officer Ms. Yeoh Kim Hong during the award presentation ceremony which was held on 3 November 2009 at the Nikko Hotel Kuala Lumpur.

Yeoh expressed pride that Public Mutual is once again receiving this prestigious recognition, which also marks the company’s 138th industry award since 1999. “This esteemed award demonstrates Public Mutual's commitment in continuously delivering top value as well as meeting the diverse needs of our unitholders,” she said. She also thanked unitholders for their continued support and confidence in Public Mutual.

Public Bank’s wholly-owned subsidiary, Public Mutual swept 10 out of the 29 awards, including the most prestigious “Best Overall Fund Group” award, at The Edge-Lipper Malaysia Fund Awards 2010 held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre on 23 February 2010. This is the 7th consecutive year Public Mutual has emerged as the biggest winner at the annual awards event.

Public Mutual’s Chairman Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Dr. Teh Hong Piow expressed pride at the outstanding achievement despite a challenging year in 2009. “These awards demonstrate Public Mutual's commitment in continuously delivering top value as well as meeting the diverse needs of our unitholders,” he said.

Public Bank’s wholly-owned subsidiary, Public Mutual, declared distributions for two of its funds. The total gross distributions declared for the financial year ended 31 March 2010 are as follows:

Public Mutual Chief Executive Officer Ms. Yeoh Kim Hong said both funds have outperformed their respective benchmarks and managed to deliver respectable double digit returns for the period ended 5 March 2010.

According to The Edge-Lipper Fund Table dated 15 March 2010, Public Aggressive Growth Fund and Public Regular Savings Fund generated one-year returns of 53.74% and 52.38% respectively for the period ended 5 March 2010. Meanwhile, the benchmarks for Public Aggressive Growth Fund and Public Regular Savings Fund recorded one-year returns of 49.53% and 49.63% respectively within the same period.

Public Aggressive Growth Fund aims to achieve high capital growth over the medium- to long-term period through investments in situational and high growth stocks. Meanwhile, Public Regular Savings Fund, which is open for EPF Members Investment Scheme, aims to achieve consistent capital growth with a steady growth of income over the medium- to long-term.

Public Mutual is Malaysia’s largest private unit trust company with 74 funds under management. It has over 2,300,000 accountholders and as at 25 February 2010, the total net asset value of the funds managed by the company was RM35.2 billion.

As for Public Enhanced Bond Fund, it has generated a one-year return of 10.99% for the period ended 8 January 2010. Public Money Market Fund, on the other hand, has generated a one-year return of 2.14% for the period ended 8 January 2010.

Public Mutual Chief Executive Officer Ms. Yeoh Kim Hong said Public Savings Fund, which was launched in 1981, is the company’s maiden fund. The fund aims to achieve long-term capital appreciation while at the same time producing a reasonable level of income. “According to The Edge-Lipper Fund Table dated 14 December 2009, Public Savings Fund generated a one-year return of 46.08% for the period ended 4 December 2009,” she said.

Public Focus Select Fund, which was launched in 2004, generated a one-year return of 45.49% for the period ended 4 December 2009. This fund aims to achieve capital growth through investments in medium-sized companies in term of market capitalisation from diversified economic sectors.

Meanwhile, Public Islamic Enhanced Bond Fund was launched in 2006 and recorded a one-year return of 10.26% for the same period. As a Shariah-based bond fund, it aims to provide a combination of annual income and modest capital growth primarily through a portfolio allocation across Islamic debt securities and equities that comply with Shariah requirements.

According to The Edge-Lipper Fund Table dated 16 November 2009, Public Far-East Dividend Fund generated a one-year return of 45.53% for the period ended 6 November 2009. At the same period, Public Select Alpha-30 Fund, which was launched in April this year, generated a six-month return of 24.27%.

Public Islamic Sector Select Fund, which was launched in November 2007, generated a one-year return of 33.70% for the period ended 6 November 2009. This fund is open for EPF Members Investment Scheme.

Meanwhile, Public Islamic Balanced Fund recorded a one-year return of 21.45% for the period ended 6 November 2009.

Public SmallCap Fund was ranked No.1 for its five-year returns in its category with a return of 90.3% for the period ended 7 August 2009, according to The Edge-Lipper Fund Table dated 17 August 2009. This fund has outperformed the benchmark, which registered a return of 49.5% for the same period. Public SmallCap Fund is distributed by Public Mutual unit trust consultants.

Meanwhile, PB Islamic Equity Fund which was launched in 2005 has generated a three-year return of 29.9% for the same period. The fund is distributed by Public Bank branches nationwide.

According to The Edge-Lipper Fund Table dated 22 June 2009, PB Growth Fund and PB Balanced Fund have generated a three-year return of 54.69% and 36.83% respectively for the period ended 12 June 2009. Tan Sri Teh said, “Both funds have been winning awards at The Edge-Lipper Malaysia Fund Awards every year since 2005.”

In the meantime, PB Fixed Income Fund and PB Islamic Bond Fund have generated a three-year return of 17.29% and 14.28% respectively for the period ended 12 June 2009. Public Islamic Money Market Fund, PB Islamic Cash Management Fund and PB Cash Management Fund which were all launched in year 2007, are short-term money market funds suitable for investors who wish to park their monies on a short-term basis before investing or switching to other funds.

Both funds have outperformed the benchmark, which registered a return of 7.92% for the same period.

Meanwhile, Public Dividend Select Fund has generated a three-year return of 23.33% for the period ended 8 May 2009, outperforming the benchmark, which registered a return of 6.30% for the same period. Public Balanced Fund and Public Select Bond Fund also surpassed their respective benchmarks by registering three-year returns of 26.33% and 13.85% respectively.

Why Invest In Unit Trust Fund?

First EPF only provide you with a return of 4-5%, and what is our inflation rate? Based on my calculation, the actual inflation rate should be more than 4%. So, EPF just preserve your value of money against inflation, you gain nothing at the end of the day. Let say, last year you have your coffee at RM 1.00, this year you have it at RM 1.10, is 10% up!!! Look at your petrol cost, 5%, fool or not?

Secondly, I will show you a big different of return calculation in a long of return for people make an investment in Unit Trust using their EPF and people just let their money in EPF without any investment. For example, there are two person of employee (A and B) which qualify to take out about RM 10000 from their EPF money to make investment into Unit Trust. The EPF only give 5% annually and Unit Trust 10% annually. Let look for calculation in below:

Age both of them (A and B ) : 25 years old

Retirement age : 55 (have 20 year before can take out all money in EPF)

Qualify to take out RM 10000 each from EPF

Rate (Annually): EPF (5%) and Unit Trust (10%)

1) Investor A has take out his money and make investment into Unit Trust.

RM 10000 x 10% = 1000 (1year)

RM 11000 x 10% = 1100 (2year)

The next calculation for 20 years, you will get RM 67275.00 in the age 55 years old.

2) Investor B not takes his money and let in the EPF.

RM 10000 x 5% = 500 (1year)

RM 10500 x 5% = 525 (2year)

The next calculation for 20 years, you will get RM 26533.00 in the age 55 years old.

The employee A has made the right chooses compare to employee B in maximizes the return of their FPF money by make investment in Unit Trust. Look a big different amount that employee A will get after his retirement compare to employee B, (67275 – 26533 = RM40742.00). Employee A will get extra RM 40742.00 after his retirement by investing in Unit Trust. No need worry, just trust me!!! HOW TO INVEST IN UNIT TRUST?

Normally there are two ways to invest in unit trust (CASH and EPF). First is by cash, normally RM1000 for started and minimum RM100 for additional top up at every time you like into yours investment account. The aged to open an investment account is 18 years old. Secondly is by EPF. I do believe every worker in Malaysia have the EPF account which divided by two account ( 1 and 2 account). Do you know the worker cannot take out any amount of money from account 1 until aged 55 years, but can only take out for unit trust investment only? The 2 account can be taking out by worker at any time for home loan, education and etc.

What benefit invest in unit trust? Did you know EPF uses yours money to invest in fund to earn returns to pay contributors smaller dividends between 4.5%-5% 0nly. But if you invest directly into unit trust you can earn between 10-12%. For those of you who have not invested in unit trust using your EPF, it’s time to invest.

For your information, this new investment scheme started since 1st February 2008, all investor can invest but not more than 20% of their savings in EPF account 1. HOW UNIT TRUST FUNCTION?

Unit trust functions with involvement of three parties namely Unit Holder (Investor) which invests in any unit trust fund, Trustee which acted as independent body to take care of that asset (Fund), which has invested and Management Company ,who provides the technical expertise to deal the fund into investments approved and monitor by Trustee.

The operation of the unit trust scheme administrated by a legislation document called deed. It states the authority of Management Company, Trustee and Unit Holder. It also said in detail how the unit trust should be operate, deal and how determining rate of any fees payment.

The above diagram has showing the flow of investment fund from shelf Investor (Unit Holder) which will pooled as a fund and would be keep and take care by Trustee. These in order to prevent Unit Trust Manager from any misused of that fund money and ensure Investor’s money (Unit Holder) not lose and under secure position.

Then, the fund would be dealt by Company Unit Trust Manager into investments or asset has permitted and monitored by Trustee. Unit trust management would give distribution to investors (Unit Holder) following the value has agreed. With that method, we can conclude that unit trust has designed to protect interest of its investors and unlike common stock investment or commodity, which does not protect interest of his investors.

Apart from that, the Investment in Unit Trust is safe and approved by Securities Commission (SC).Money from investor, which has invested is safe and guaranteed in case something happened to that unit trust management company.
